As a key agency of the Philippine Government, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is charged with creating a business-friendly environment conducive to the growth of enterprises and supportive of fair and robust trade in goods and services, both within and outside the Philippines.
DTI wears several hats - it is a coordinating agency for all government activities related to trade, industry, and investments; a promotional machinery for further trade and investments; and a regulatory body to ensure that fair competition prevails.
Given the priorities of Philippine economic development, its key result areas are to:
- Attract and direct investments to areas leading to balanced agro-industrial developments;
- Reinforce the country's competitive advantage in the world markets; and
- Ensure that the benefits of economic progress reach the countryside and become every Filipino's gain.
At present, DTI exercises its mandates through 20 line bureaus/support offices, 14 attached agencies which are manned by over 5,000 employees. It has 16 regional and 78 provincial offices nationwide.
DTI's services aim to advance the interests of its stakeholders/target clients - investors/businessmen, exporters, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and Filipino consumers.
Investment entry and expansion are eased through incentives and programs that make it easy to set up a business, market and ship products, and undertake new and larger projects. Services for exporters and SMEs include product design, market promotion, and financing. Labor is helped through training to upgrade people's skills and improve incomes.
Consumers are made aware of their rights which DTI seeks to protect through, among others, strict enforcement of fair trade laws and prompt resolution of consumer complaints.
