In celebration of this year’s Consumer Welfare Month, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-4B recently conducted the Regional Consumer Quiz Bee at the Tiara Hotel, Makati City on 21 October 2011.

Eduard Joseph Rodelas of Alobo National High School in Sta. Cruz, Marinduque reigned as the champion of the quiz bee competition besting other 7 participants from the five provinces of Region 4B or the MIMAROPA region. Runner-ups are Princess Shaira Abo-abo of San Francisco College of Palawan as the first runner-up and Mary Milorrie Campos of Tugdan National High School as second runner-up.

Other participants of the quiz bee are Rona Joyce Viana of Magsikap National Vocational High School, Occidental Mindoro, Ma. Antoneth Ylagan of Community Vocational High School, Oriental Mindoro, Mariel Singsing of Bansud National High School, Oriental Mindoro, and Jirich Baldemoro of Bahile National High School, Palawan.

The DTI conducts awareness activities for the public to get involved and participate as consumers,” said DTI-4B Director Joel B. Valera. The Consumer Act of the Philippines or R.A. 7394 aims to protect consumers against health hazards, deception and unfair sales acts and practices as well as to provide information and education of this law, provide means of redress and to involve consumer representatives in formulation of social and economic policies.

We are particularly interested in getting the youth participate in the process,” said Valera.

At present, the DTI is collaborating with all city and municipal mayors to help mitigate the impact of the price increases in basic commodities.

The DTI also improved its mechanism for redress. From 2010 until the first quarter of 2011, 91,828 consumer complaints were received by the DTI Consumer welfare desks, of which 98.7% were resolved. Another DTI program that is garnering support from the public is the Diskwento Caravan which aims to help relieve consumer from rising prices of goods.

As of 30 October 2011, the DTI successfully conducted 72 runs of Diskwento Caravans nationwide providing discounts from 20% to 70% on basic and prime goods to consumers generating a total of P12.4M in sales with the biggest sales from NCR worth P5M. There are 24 more caravans lined up until the end of 2011.
