Makati City, Philippines— On December 2, at the AIM Conference Center, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) held the 2024 Wholesale and Retail Trade Forum, where it sought to position the wholesale and retail trade sector for long-term success.

“The wholesale and retail trade sector is the backbone of our economy. In 2023, it contributed PHP 4.4 trillion to our gross domestic product and employed over 10.3 million Filipinos,” said DTI Secretary Cristina A. Roque.

“The DTI, together with the Philippine Retailers Association (PRA) and Supply Chain Management Association of the Philippines (SCMAP), is committed to ensure that this sector thrives in a Bagong Pilipinas. Together, we will foster sustainable and inclusive growth to empower businesses to succeed and create quality jobs for all Filipinos, ” the trade secretary declared.

The forum brought together key stakeholders to formulate a job blueprint—a collaborative effort among the DTI, PRA, and SCMAP—aimed at generating quality jobs, enhancing supply chain efficiency, and leveraging digital technologies to empower businesses.

During the event, PRA President Bobby Claudio expressed optimism over the job blueprint’s role in bolstering the economy.

“The retail sector is ready to embrace innovation and enhance the customer experience. This blueprint provides a clear roadmap for us to achieve those goals while contributing to the nation’s economic progress,” said Mr. Claudio.

Building on this theme of collaboration, SCMAP President Dennis Llovido stressed the importance of a robust logistics framework.

“A strong supply chain is essential for the success of the retail sector. We are committed to working with our partners to improve efficiency and ensure the smooth flow of goods from producers to consumers,” shared Mr. Llovido.

Convening key players from the retail, wholesale, and other key industries, this forum is a crucial step to creating a more dynamic, resilient, and inclusive retail landscape in the Philippines. ♦
