
Majayjay, Laguna — On June 21, 2024, the Department of Trade and Industry – Laguna Provincial Office (DTI-Laguna), through Negosyo Center Majayjay and in partnership with the Local Government Unit of Majayjay, conducted a seminar entitled “Understanding Intellectual Property Rights and Branding Your Business” at the 2nd floor ABC Hall, Municipal Building, Majayjay, Laguna. The event ran from 8:30 AM to 12:00 NN and was attended by new and existing micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) from various sectors who are based in the said municipality.
The primary objective of the seminar is to equip MSMEs to have a comprehensive understanding on intellectual property rights and their significance in the context of branding. This knowledge is deemed crucial for effectively protecting trademarks and driving business success.
The program commenced with an opening prayer and the singing of the Philippine National Anthem. This was followed by a warm welcome remarks delivered by Hon. Romeo P. Amorado, the Municipal Mayor of Majayjay, Laguna, who emphasized the importance of the seminar for the local business community.

The first session was led by Mr. Joel Caalaman, an Intellectual Property Field Specialist from IPSO CALABARZON. He provided a comprehensive overview of the intellectual property rights, elucidating the distinctions among trademark, patent, and copyright applications. Caalaman also introduced some incentive programs designed to assist MSMEs, such as “Juana Make a Mark,” which allows eligible MSMEs to register their trademarks at a reduced cost.
Following this, Mr. Nico Toriano, a Business Counsellor from Negosyo Center Lumban, discussed the crucial role of branding in business. He clarified how branding differs from marketing and offered valuable insights into building a strong brand. Toriano also shared practical tips and highlighted common challenges and pitfalls that businesses may encounter in the branding process.
Overall, the seminar received positive feedback from the participants who expressed their satisfaction with the learning activity. It provided a rich learning experience, equipping them with essential knowledge and tools to protect their intellectual property and enhance their business branding. ♦
