VICTORIA, LAGUNA – The Department of Trade and Industry – Laguna Provincial Office (DTI-Laguna) and the Provincial Government of Laguna, through the Local Economic Development and Investment Promotions Office (LEDIPO), convened the Laguna Local Price Coordinating Council (LPCC) 1st Semestral Meeting on May 23, 2024 at the Governor’s Office Executive Conference Room, Provincial Capitol Compound, Santa Cruz, Laguna.

LPCC Chairman and Laguna Governor Hon. Ramil L. Hernandez, represented by LEDIPO Head Fatima Eleonor A. Villaseñor, and LPCC Vice Chairman and DTI-Laguna Provincial Director Christian Ted O. Tungohan presided over the meeting.

Representatives from the Department of the Interior and Local Government – Laguna, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources IV-A, the Philippine Statistics Office – Laguna, and the DTI-Laguna discussed the status of LPCCs in Laguna and the 2024 1st quarter price and supply situation of basic necessities and prime commodities (BNPCs) in the province.

LEDIPO Head Villaseñor underscored that the Province of Laguna has been recognized as the biggest contributor to the Philippines’ gross domestic product in 2022. She also highlighted the importance of the LPCC and its regular conduct of price and supply monitoring.

LPCC Vice Chairman and DTI-Laguna Provincial Director Tungohan affirmed that the Laguna LPCC is active in the regular price and supply monitoring in the province. He emphasized that the price and supply monitoring reports are crucial in formulating suggested retail prices especially when price freeze is declared. He also reassured that the Laguna LPCC continuously supports consumer protection in line with the President’s agenda on affordability and accessibility of BNPC prices.

Per the Republic Act No. 7581, otherwise known as the “Price Act”, the LPCC plays a pivotal role in recommendations of reasonable pricing of certain BNPCs in their respective areas. Essentially, the LPCC is mandated to monitor the price and supply of BNPCs immediately following the emergencies such as crisis, calamity, or state of emergency. Pursuant to the Republic Act No. 7394, otherwise known as the “Consumer Act of the Philippines”, the LPCC also provides support in protecting the interests of consumers against health and safety hazards; protecting the interests of consumers against deceptive, unfair, and unconscionable sales acts and practices; promoting consumer welfare; and establishing standards of conduct for business and industry. ♦
