In the heart of Pakil, Laguna, a small town known for its rich history in craftsmanship, the story of Amira Boxes Handicrafts began to unfold in the early 1990s. As one of the pioneers in the hard box making industry in the municipality, what started as a modest supplier of handcrafted boxes and paper maché items for exporters has now blossomed into a thriving business that celebrates the artistry of handcrafted boxes.

The journey of Amira Boxes Handicrafts deeply intertwined with the community of Pakil, Laguna. The business not only preserved the traditional craft of hard box making but also became a beacon of opportunity for the local residents. By employing locals in the manufacturing process, Amira Boxes contributed to the economic vitality of the town, ensuring that the art of handicraft would continue to thrive.

The year 2020 marked a pivotal moment for Ms. Myrell Josue, registered owner of Amira Boxes Handicrafts, as she introduced the business in the local market. As the world dealt with the challenges of the pandemic, the business seized an opportunity to expand its reach. Recognizing the potential for growth, Amira Boxes launched its brand, bringing in products to the local market. The business diversified its offerings, introducing a broader range of products that included personalized gift boxes for various occasions and customized hard box packaging for small businesses and corporate clients.

Following this, in 2021, Myrell joined and participated in the several programs of the Department of Trade and Industry such as the One Town, One Product Next Generation and the Kapatid Mentor Me – Money Market Encounter which all help the business to expand further and open even more opportunities.

Although the pandemic was a challenge, Myrell saw it as an opportunity since the demand for premium box packaging from small businesses that emerged during this period allowed Amira Boxes Handicrafts to secure long-term clients and expand its customer base to include corporate clients and retail buyers.

Each box is a testament to the skill and dedication of the local artisans and is being crafted with precision and care. The handmade nature of the boxes added a unique value to the products and gifts that they contained, setting Amira Boxes Handicrafts apart in the market.

Following the interventions provided by the Department of Trade and Industry, the business has spread its connections and participated in regional and national trade fairs, showcasing its products and representing the hard box making industry of Pakil. Furthermore, as Amira Boxes adapts to the new normal, it embraced the digital world by making its products available online and expanding its product line-up to cater to a wider market. Amira Boxes’ ability to offer personalized gift boxes for all occasions resonated with customers, further solidifying its presence in the market.

Very recently, in 2024 during the Turumba Festival, the Local Government Unit of Pakil awarded Myrell and Amira Boxes as the Most Outstanding Young Entrepreneur, a recognition that speaks volumes of its impact and success. Their achievements became a proof to their commitment and excellence.

Looking ahead, Myrell plans to continue innovating and introducing new product lines. The business is also in the process of renovating its production area and adding a showroom to enhance the client experience.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, Myrell emphasized the importance of passion and purpose in business. “Do what you have to do…but do it with a goal, do it with a purpose because when you keep that in mind, every small win, every accomplishment, every success will sure feel extra fulfilling. Because in the end, hindi lang ikaw ‘yung panalo. You got to pay it forward. Panalo din ‘yung mga nasa paligid mo, ‘yung clients, ‘yung team mo. Hindi lang ikaw ‘yung aangat, dapat sila din.”

This principle has guided Myrell in journey of Amira Boxes Handicrafts, ensuring that the success of the business also uplifts those around it. She added “one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned through DTI-Laguna that I always keep in mind is to not be afraid to continue learning and meet people. Be open to changes and adapt as necessary.” These lessons have been pivotal in shaping Amira Boxes Handicrafts’ approach to business and its ability to adapt and thrive in a changing world.

Indeed, the story of Amira Boxes Handicrafts is an evidence of tradition, innovation, community building, resilience, creativity, and the enduring essence of entrepreneurship. As it continues to craft its future, it remains a shining example of how a passion for craftsmanship can lead to a handcrafted success story. ♦
