In a continued effort to promote workplace safety across high-risk industries, the Philippine Accreditation Bureau (PAB) successfully conducted a half-day webinar on May 20, 2025, focused on enhancing occupational health and safety awareness in the Philippine mining sector.

The virtual event attracted almost 400 participants from mining companies, government agencies, and safety professionals nationwide. This reflects the sector’s growing commitment to fostering safe and healthy working environments.

The orientation began with a short overview of PAB’s mandates and services, presented by Ms. Sheena De La Torre of PAB. She highlighted PAB’s role as the national accreditation body, ensuring the competence and integrity of testing laboratories, inspection bodies, and certification bodies that support the national quality and safety framework.

This was followed by a comprehensive discussion by the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Consultant Engr. Nelia Granadillos on the Overview of ISO 45001:2018 and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Requirements and Regulatory Framework related to OHSMS. She outlined key DOLE regulations on Occupational Safety and Health, including RA 11058 and its implementing rules (DO-198-18 and DO 252-25).

The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where key concerns from participants regarding occupational safety compliance were addressed. Common questions focused on the proper provision and cost responsibility of PPE, qualifications and recognition of Safety Officers, and mandatory OSH training frequencies. Attendees also sought clarity on employer liabilities, particularly in non-work-related incidents, and employee rights concerning psychosocial hazards. There were multiple queries on compliance requirements for the administrative office and the necessity of ISO 45001 for mining operations. Overall, the questions reflected a strong interest in practical application and regulatory interpretation of OHSMS standards in diverse workplace settings.

By bringing together stakeholders from the mining industry and regulatory community, the webinar highlighted PAB’s continued commitment to fostering a culture of safety and excellence. It reinforced the Bureau’s support for the sector in implementing strong occupational health and safety practices aligned with national and development objectives and global standards.
