
Misamis Oriental Provincial Cacao Industry Development Council held its annual assessment and evaluation last December 27, 2024 at the Dynasty Court Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City to review and align the progress of the province’s cacao industry with the Philippine Cacao Roadmap.
The annual assessment provided insights into the long-term growth potential of the cacao industry in the Philippines, zeroing in on the vast opportunities in Misamis Oriental.
The Council’s initiatives include the increase of cacao production, improvement of livelihoods of Misamis Oriental cacao farmers/processors, and integrating the province into the global cacao market.
The annual assessment and evaluation served as a platform for stakeholders to realign their efforts and focus on innovative strategies that can drive sustainable development and competitiveness in the global cacao industry
DTI Misamis Oriental OIC-Provincial Director Jesusa Abear emphasized the pivotal role of the council in shaping and advancing the cacao sector in the province during her welcome remarks.
Additionally, OIC-PD Abear lauded the collaborative approach of the council with various stakeholder. She also urged the council to continue to focus on innovation, quality improvement, and sustainability to ensure that the cacao products meet the global demand for high-quality and ethically sourced beans.
The year-end assessment and evaluation included presentations on the Council’s accomplishment for 2024, 2025 program of the DTI Misamis Oriental’s Rural Agro-enterprise Partnership for Inclusive Development (RAPID) Growth Project for farmer-organizations, and programs on cacao industry development of the Agricultural Training Institute-10.
Mr. Rhey Maputo, aggregates supervisor of Doncris Cacao Products Trading (DCA) from Gingoog City, presented an update on the enormous demand for cacao beans as well as the company’s interest in partnering with local cacao farmers for bulk supply.
The year-end assessment and evaluation concluded with a commitment, headed by Dr. Agustin Mercado, Jr. as the Council Chairperson and MOCIDA president, to continue working together with all stakeholders towards making Misamis Oriental a leading cacao producer in Northern Mindanao.
The Misamis Oriental Provincial Cacao Industry Development Council was attended by 36 participants including Council officers, Misamis Oriental Cacao Industry Development Association Inc. (MOCIDA) members, key officers of seven farmer-organizations in Misamis Oriental, private SMEs, and government line agencies.
The activity was hosted by the DTI Misamis Oriental RAPID Growth Project, with DTI Misamis Oriental serving as secretariat of the council. ♦
