A seasoned journalist with over 40 years of experience in the field leads a training session on effective news writing techniques to staff of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 10, including the personnel of its special project—Rural Agro-enterprise Partnership for Inclusive Development (RAPID) Growth Project.
Skilled writer and editor Uriel Quilinguing, who has trained numerous aspiring journalists in writing contests and served as media consultant to both private and government agencies, trained around 20 DTI and RAPID Growth Project participants on 26 September 26 2024 at the DTI-10 Conference Room, Cagayan de Oro City.
The Effective Writing for News and Storytelling Workshop was organized by RAPID Growth Project, a value-chain based and market-driven business development program funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). The program aims to help agriculture-based processing enterprises become more innovative, productive, and competitive in the global market.
The workshop aimed to enhance the writing skills of the staff for news reporting and feature writing. This will be essential in increasing public awareness of initiatives implemented by the RAPID Growth Project and other programs of DTI.
Quilinguing covered numerous topics including the communication cycle, techniques for writing, and importance of ensuring accuracy of information with credible sources.
Eziel Monteza, Monitoring and Evaluation Assistant of the RAPID Growth Project in DTI Lanao del Norte, said that she gained important insights in the write shop, including the principles of effective news writing, clarity, accuracy, and importance of a strong lead.
“I have learned various writing styles that will help me improve my report preparation skills, allowing me to present information more clearly and effectively.”
The workshop concluded with a practical exercise where participants virtually interviewed the beneficiaries of the RAPID Growth Project and subsequently wrote articles for critiquing. ♦
