In line with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 2’s mission to uplift community lives, especially those in the informal sectors, DTI Isabela, through its Bamboo Industry Enhancement Program, collaborated with the Department of Health (DOH) to deliver a comprehensive 2-day Training on Bamboo Handicrafts Making. This training was held on 18-19 July 2024, at the DOH Treatment and Rehabilitation Center in San Antonio, City of Ilagan, Isabela. The training was provided to 21 drug reformists.
The training was conducted by Mr. Juanito Mallannao, a seasoned Product Developer from the Local Government Unit of Cabagan. On the first day, Mr. Mallannao provided a hands-on demonstration on the preparation of bamboo poles, teaching participants the fundamental skills required to work with bamboo as a raw material. He then led them through the process of creating bamboo chicken nests, which will be utilized in the center’s community’s livelihood chicken egg production, creating a direct economic benefit for the participants during their rehabilitation program.
On the second day, the training focused on more intricate craftsmanship, with Mr. Mallannao teaching the participants how to make bamboo baskets. This session aimed to develop the participants’ ability to produce high-quality bamboo products that could be sold in local and wider markets. The skills imparted during this training are intended to provide the participants with viable and sustainable income opportunities, aiding in their reintegration into society.
This initiative underscores DTI R2 Isabela’s commitment to community development and rehabilitation. By equipping rehabilitated individuals with practical skills in bamboo handicraft making, the program aims to foster self-reliance and economic independence. The training also supports the broader goals of reducing recidivism among drug reformists and promoting their positive contribution to society.
Moreover, this program highlights the potential of bamboo as a versatile and sustainable resource. Bamboo products are not only environmentally friendly but also offer significant market potential. By tapping into this resource, the program helps participants develop valuable entrepreneurial skills and encourages the growth of the local bamboo industry.
The 2-day Training on Bamboo Handicrafts Making represents a vital step towards empowering rehabilitated individuals with the skills necessary for sustainable livelihoods. Through this initiative, DTI R2 Isabela and the DOH aim to create a positive and lasting impact on the lives of the participants and their communities.
