In the barangay of Cansuso in Cavinti, Laguna, a group of women began with a humble yet ambitious dream. It all started when a private sector company, Philippine Relief and Development Services (PHILRADS), Inc., organized a free training seminar on coconut processing techniques. Women from the barangay, eager to learn and empower themselves, attended the 3-month training last May to July 2022.
The seminar proved to be a turning point. Equipped with newfound knowledge and skills in coconut processing, the women saw an opportunity to use the abundance of coconuts in their barangay to create sustainable livelihoods for themselves. Encouraged by the private sector’s support, they banded together to form the Cansuso Women’s Coco Processor Association (CWCPA). With determination in their hearts, they pooled their resources and ideas. Their dream was simple yet powerful: to transform locally harvested coconuts into high-quality products that would not only sustain their families but also uplift their entire community.
With the initial capital of Php100,000.00 provided by the PHILRADS, Inc., they acquired the necessary equipment and materials for their coco processing business, turning their simple workspace into a busy hub of productivity. Using traditional techniques passed down through generations and integrating modern innovations learned from the seminar, the women began producing an array of coconut-based products like delicious coco jam, coco aminos, and virgin coconut oil.
Recognizing their potential, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Cavinti stepped in to support the association. They provided essential equipment and facilitated accreditation with both the LGU and the Department of Labor and Employment. With this backing, the association flourished further. Their products gained wider recognition, and their business practices became officially recognized.
Their potential did not go unnoticed. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) also stepped in, offering invaluable support. They provided training, seminars, and guidance on their products’ packaging and labeling and even facilitated their participation in multiple trade fairs organized by the Laguna Provincial Office. Additionally, the association became one of the beneficiaries of the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan program of DTI Laguna.
Through the combined efforts and assistance from government programs/initiatives, CWCPA saw their dreams materialize as they secured an international buyer for their products. This milestone marked a significant achievement for the association, signifying their dedication and the quality of their products. The Kat Lai Technology Limited of Hongkong formed strategic partnership with CWCPA that was witnessed by LGU Cavinti and the Department of Agriculture – Philippine Coconut Authority. This agreement not only provided a steady income stream but also opened doors to global markets, expanding their reach beyond their community and into the international arena.
Despite all their achievements, the association also encountered their fair share of challenges along the way. There were times when they faced financial hardships, experiencing periods of no income. Additionally, misunderstandings among members tested their unity and resolve. However, through these trials, the women learned valuable lessons. They realized the importance of responsibility and strength in overcoming difficulty. They understood that success required giving their absolute best, even when faced with problems. They committed to giving their “101%”—going above and beyond—to ensure the success of their association and the realization of their collective vision.
Looking ahead, CWCPA has clear goals for the future. They are committed to deepening their understanding of coconut products. Through ongoing education and series of training, they aim to become experts in their craft, exploring innovative techniques and best practices in coconut processing. Also, they seek to introduce a range of new offerings that showcase the usefulness and richness of coconuts. Fueled by government support and their own determination, the association has achieved remarkable success. Their products, renowned throughout the community and even in the global market, are evidence of their excellence and skill. Through their hard work and perseverance, these women have not only elevated their own livelihoods but also become inspiration, demonstrating the influence of community-driven originalities in shaping a brighter future for all. ♦
