Dasmariñas, Cavite—The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) hosted an educational tour for 450 students from the University of Northern Philippines (UNP). The visits took place at the DTI’s Bureau of Philippine Standards (BPS) Testing Laboratory on March 21 and 28.
This initiative aimed to enhance the students’ understanding of standards, technical regulations, and conformity assessment procedures (STRACAP). Furthermore, it highlighted the critical role of the DTI’s testing laboratories in upholding product quality and safeguarding consumer safety.
“Through this learning tour, we are equipping students with a deeper appreciation for the science behind product safety and quality—knowledge that is essential in building trusted and competitive Philippine industries,” said Secretary Cristina Roque.
“This initiative is aligned with the ‘Bagong Pilipinas’ vision of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., which champions a whole-of-nation approach to inclusive development. By introducing students early to the value of standards and compliance, we are nurturing future professionals who will uphold consumer welfare, drive innovation, and help shape a safer, stronger, and more resilient country,” she added.

The learning tour provided UNP students with unprecedented access to the BPS Testing Laboratory’s facilities. They observed the actual testing procedures for various regulated products, including electrical products, construction materials, and household items, as well as the training rooms of the Construction Manpower Development Foundation.
Beyond the laboratory visits, DTI-BPS experts conducted technical briefings on the Philippine National Standards (PNS). Students gained valuable insights into the rigorous development process behind these standards and their alignment with international benchmarks, crucial for enhancing the Philippines’ global competitiveness.

As the National Standards Body, the DTI-BPS develops the PNS, which serves as voluntary references for industries and stakeholders. The compliance becomes mandatory when standards are adopted into technical regulations issued by regulatory agencies.
