REGION 5 (BICOL REGION)
DTI-Region 5 or the Bicol Region is situated at the southernmost tip of the island of Luzon. It is composed of 6 provinces: Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, and Sorsogon, Catanduanes and Masbate; and seven cities namely, Legazpi, Naga, Iriga, Tabaco, Ligao, Sorsogon, and Masbate.
It is one of the Philippines’ best-known tourist destinations popular for its volcanoes, beaches, caverns, coves, and other natural wonders. The world-renowned Mayon Volcano, for instance, has never failed to amaze both local and international travelers with its majestic peak.
Aside from its scenic spots, “Bicolandia” boasts of sumptuous gastronomic delights that are guaranteed to fire up your palates with the region’s favorite ingredients — sili (chili) gata (coconut milk), and the best-tasting pili nut. These local delicacies should be on every traveler’s must-eat checklist: laing/pinangat (taro leaves and chili cooked in coconut milk, and Bicol Express (sliced pork/fish/chicken, chili and tiny shrimps cooked in coconut milk.
The largest component of the region’s economy is agriculture with close to 40 percent of its workforce dependent on the industry. Other industries include commercial fishing, mining, handicrafts, jewelry manufacturing, among others.
