The Department of Trade and Industry – Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS) celebrates again its annual commemoration of the importance of standards and standardization activities in protecting the consumers’ right to safety through the National Standards Week (NSW). NSW is celebrated every 8 to 14 October by virtue of Proclamation No. 1327, s. 1974, which also assigned the DTI-BPS to lead the yearly observance.

NSW is celebrated alongside the World Standards Day (WSD), which is held every 14th of October. This year’s NSW adopts the WSD theme, ‘Shared vision for a better world’. The theme emphasizes on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which project to address social imbalances, develop a sustainable economy, and slow the rate of climate change, are highly ambitious. To reach them will require the cooperation of many public and private partners, and the use of all available tools, including international standards and conformity assessment.

The WSD celebration is led by the major international standardization organizations namely, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The DTI-BPS is a member to the ISO and the IEC as part of the Philippines’ commitment to the World Trade Organization – Technical Barriers to Trade Agreement (WTO-TBT).

Due to the continuing community quarantines imposed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the DTI-BPS carries on with conducting its NSW and WSD events online.
