The Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS) organized an appreciation visit on the physical standards and a tour in the National Metrology Laboratory last 24 July 2019 at the National Metrology Laboratory of the Philippines, Department of Science and Technology Compound, General Santos Avenue, Taguig City.

The visit is intended to further capacitate the DTI-BPS Standards Officers that perform functions and tasks on national standardization and the need to understand the International System of units, in relation to metrology, standardization and conformity assessment that constitutes the National Quality Infrastructure.

The NML is the national metrology institute of the Philippines tasked by law to be responsible for establishing and maintaining the national measurement standards for physical quantities such as mass, temperature, pressure, voltage, resistance, luminous intensity and time interval and their dissemination to the Filipino users. It is a division of the Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

Before the tour in the NML laboratories, the DTI-BPS staff were oriented on the different sections of the NML laboratories that maintains the primary standards of the country. NML Chief Aurora V. Kimura led the introduction of the National Metrology Laboratory and the importance of the International System of Units, calibration and metrology. An overview of the standards sections of the NML were presented by:

• Mr. Manuel Ruiz and Ms. Rosaline Navarro for the Electricity Standards Section
• Ms. Maryness Salazar for the Pressure and Force Standards Section
• Mr. Gerry Garinggan for the Length Standards Section
• Mr. Kiveen Suycano for the Mass Standards Section
• Ms. Monalisa Enot for the Thermometry and Hygrometry Standards Section
• Mr. Jose Marco Latosa and Ms. Loreibelle Abian for the Volume and Flow Standards Section
