The Department of Trade and Industry – Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS) continues to strengthen its information campaign on standards and standardization activities through the “Enhanced Standards Blitz Program”. The Enhanced Standards Blitz Program is a standards advocacy campaign to the public by conducting awareness sessions on standards and standardi zation programs in schools, relevant industries and professional offices.

School Visits

To reach out to future standards professionals, the DTI-BPS regularly conducts school visits to secondary schools of the National Capital Region through the Enhanced Standards Blitz Program.

Representatives from the different divisions of DTI-BPS (Standards Mainstreaming Division, Standards Development Division, Standards Conformity Division, Product Testing Division) impart the knowledge and understanding of the benefits of standards and its role in product safety and reliability by visiting schools and offices, showing how standards keep consumers safe.

Schools visited by DTI-BPS on 2018 were Don Antonio de Zuzuarregui Sr. Memorial Academy, Upper Bicutan National High School, Western Bicutan National High School, Pasay City North High School – Tramo Campus and Marikina Science High School. A total of 414 students and teachers participated in the DTI-BPS visits to schools.

 

Laboratory Visits

After the school visits, the DTI-BPS brings the students and teachers to the DTI-BPS Testing Center or the DTI-accredited laboratories for them to witness how products are tested based on the Philippine National Standards (PNS). The test engineers demonstrate how critical products such as washing machine, refrigerator and television are tested for product quality and safety.

Awareness Sessions

The DTI-BPS hosted the “8th Standards’ Essay Writing Contest (SEWC), 2nd Standards’ Poster Making Contest (SPMC) and 5th Broadcasting Seminar for KATBP Bidang Konsyumer”.

Students and teachers from various high schools of the National Capital Region division were oriented on standards, their benefits and uses in sessions during the 49th World Standards Day (WSD) and the 44th National Standards Week (NSW), at the Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC) last 08 October 2018.

22 schools participated in the NSW and WSD sessions including Caloocan High School, Las Piñas City National High School, Makati Science High School, Malabon National High School, Mandaluyong Science High School, Antonio Maceda High School, Manila Science High School, Marikina Science High School, Filemon T. Lizan Senior High School, Navotas National High School, Parañaque National High School-Baclaran, Pasay City National Science High School, Pasay City West High School, Pasig City Science High School, Pinagbuhatan High School, San Juan National High School, Taguig Science High School, Senator Rene Cayetano Science and Technology High School, Valenzuela City School of Mathematics and Science, Mataas na Paaralang Neptali A. Gonzales, Valeriano Fugoso High School and Ramon Magsaysay High School.

Capability Building Programs

The DTI-BPS also has capability programs to regularly capacitate the DTI Officers that perform functions and tasks on standards implementation. Through the capability program, DTI Standards Enforcers can raise their issues and concerns involving the implementation of relevant rules. On 24-26 September 2018, DTI-BPS went to Davao City for a Capability Building Program for the Standards Enforcers of Regions 9, 10, 11, 12 and CARAGA attended the program.

Enforcement officers from the DTI-Fair Trade Enforcement Bureau (FTEB) also had their three-day Capability Program at the UPRC Building, 316 Sen. Gil Puyat Ave., Makati City from 24-26 July 2018. The FTEB enforcement officers were updated on the latest BPS issuances/policies on chemical and other consumer products, electrical household appliances and mechanical/construction materials.

This year, the DTI-BPS intends to reach more schools and offices to pass on the importance and use of standards in the Filipinos’ everyday lives.
