The Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) Strategic Trade Management Office (STMO) convened the Strategic Trade Management Act (STMA) Compliance Officers Town Hall Meeting on 31 March 2022 at the Makati Diamond Residences. The event was simultaneously livestreamed via Zoom.

The town hall meeting was comprised of two parts: first, the closing ceremony of the STMA Compliance Officers Training Course and second, a discussion of key regulatory updates.

The closing ceremony brought together the training participants who completed the 2022 STMA Compliance Officers Training course. The Compliance Officers Training was designed to equip compliance officers for STMO-registered companies with knowledge on strategic trade management and ICP best practices to help them in their compliance and responsibilities under R.A. 10697. The course featured modules on Strategic Trade Management fundamentals, a comprehensive survey of ICP elements, and special topics such as targeted financial sanctions, export clearance, and consequences of non-compliance, among others. The course was administered remotely via STMO’s LearnSTM Platform between 16 – 30 March 2022.

Mr. Lino Arboleda, Trade Compliance Governance Leader for APAC of Olympus Corporation, delivered the keynote speech with the theme of “Promoting a Culture of Compliance”. Mr. Arboleda underscored the importance of strategic trade management awareness and clear compliance process as essential elements towards informed compliance. The event also featured the Internal Compliance Program (ICP) of Infineon Technologies Philippines, Inc.

Key export control regulatory updates were presented during the second part of the program. Mr. Michael Burnett, Regional Export Control Officer and First Secretary for Commercial Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore, provided a brief overview of the recent sanctions imposed by the US in light of the ongoing military conflict between Russia and Ukraine. He was followed by Engr. Lorenz Anthony Fernando, Division Chief of STMO’s Registration and Authorization Division, who discussed the latest Registration and General Authorization updates.

Over 70 representatives from the industry and government participated in the Town Hall Meeting. ♦
