At the sidelines of the 33rd ASEAN Summit, DTI Secretary Ramon M. Lopez spoke as a panelist along with Singapore Minister of Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing and Malaysia Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Darell Leiking at the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit (ABIS) 2018 recently held in Singapore.

The discussion focused on NAVIGATING ASEAN’S ECONOMIC where panelists shared respective thoughts on how to press harder on economic integration and further trade liberalization within ASEAN and each government’s efforts to sustain growth momentum in the region amidst China-US trade tensions and rising protectionist sentiments.

ABIS 2018 comprised of two-day business conference revolving around the theme of “Building Tomorrow, Connecting Today” and has attracted more than 1,000 participants which included high-level government and business personalities from the region and beyond who are pivotal in elevating the economic growth in ASEAN.

The ABIS is an annual event simultaneously held with the ASEAN Summit and serves as a platform that enables thought leadership sharing by head of states, key policy makers and top business leaders about ASEAN’s business and investment landscape. ABIS 2018 was organized by the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC) and the Singapore Business Federation (SBF).♦

DTI Singapore successfully represented the Philippines at the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit (ABIS) 2018 through a booth exhibition promoting the country as the leading investment destination in the region.

The Philippine booth displayed several investment information to convey to summit participants that aside from young, educated and English-speaking workforce, the Philippines offers foreign investors a captive 101 million domestic market and unrivaled access to other key markets such as the ASEAN, ASEAN Partners (China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand), EUROPE - EFTA (Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein) EU (GSP+), and the United States

ABIS 2018 attracted more than 1,000 participants which included high-level government and business personalities from the region and beyond who are pivotal in elevating the economic growth in ASEAN.

The event was held last 12-13 November at the Sands Expo and Convention Center and was organized by the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC) and the Singapore Business Federation (SBF).♦

DTI Singapore Commercial Counselor Cynthia Ricafort delivered a talk today on “Doing Business in the Philippines” at an investment seminar organised by Raja & Tann Asia.

On her presentation, Ms. Ricafort highlighted the continuous surge in the manufacturing industry in the Philippines where it is experiencing an average annual growth of 7.6% since 2010, making Philippines the best country to invest in manufacturing.

Aside from investment opportunities in manufacturing, electronics, aerospace, IT/BPO, healthcare and tourism, Ms. Ricafort stressed that infrastructure is also another fast-growing industry in the country which demand foreign investments as the government’s “Build, Build, Build” program is in a full swing.

Furthermore, Ms. Ricafort mentioned the government’s effort to protect the interests of foreign investors with the implementation of R.A. 11032 or the Ease of Doing Business Act which simplifies and shortens the business processing in the country.

Also present in the seminar are Philippine Embassy in Singapore Ambassador Joseph Yap who delivered the welcome address, Enterprise Singapore Deputy Director for Southeast Asia Mr. Chew Hwee Yong who gave a talk on the services of Enterprise Singapore to Singapore businesses wanting to go international, and partners from C&G Law Office in Manila - Atty. Albert Vincent Yu Chang and Atty. Annalisa Carlotta who both provided an overview of the legal aspects of doing business in the Philippines.♦

The City Government of Davao embarked on a 3-day Investment and Tourism Roadshow in Singapore to promote various investment and tourism opportunities in the crown jewel of Southern Philippines.

Known as the safest city in the Philippines, Davao City enjoys continues surge in tourist arrivals after President Rodrigo Duterte, who was its city mayor for about 20 years, was elected as President of the Republic of the Philippines in 2016.

From 1.6 million tourist arrivals in 2016, Davao City welcomed 2 million tourists in 2017 and as more tourists come so as the need for more investments for infrastructure, hospitality, food manufacturing and Halal businesses in the city.

DTI Singapore and the Philippine Embassy in Singapore assisted the Davao City delegation in meeting the leaders of the Singapore Business Federation, Singapore Fruits and Vegetables Import and Export Association (SFVIEA), Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce & Industry (SMCCI),National Association of Travel Agents Singapore - NATAS and National University of Singapore Society (NUSS).

As a side activity during the City Government of Davao 's Roadshow in Singapore, the delegation had a site visit to Orient Pearl Group (OPG) and met the people behind one of the largest Philippine food importers in Singapore. Through the site visit, the delegation had an overview of Singapore food market, learned the emerging buying trends locally and recognized the value of importers to market Philippine brands in a foreign country. DICT Undersecretary Mon Ibrahim and the Philippine delegation warmly received the support of the Philippine Embassy in Singapore headed by Philippine Ambassador to Singapore Joseph Del Mar Yap, First Consul Gonarao Musor and DTI Singapore Commercial Counsellor Cynthia Ricafort during their visit at the Philippine Pavilion in ConnecTech Asia 2018 event held at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Center in Singapore.


The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) brought together Philippine companies namely PLDT Enterprise, Advanced World Solutions, Titanium Technologies and start-ups - Rumarocket, Mobile Optima, Snapcart, Payruler, HYBrain and MediAid to show the country’s expertise and capabilities in digital solutions and outsourcing, software development, automation technology, digital platform solutions, machine learning and artificial intelligence tools, and call center (BPO) services. 

To optimize the participation of the Philippine delegation at the event, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Singapore headed by Commercial Counsellor Cynthia Ricafort assisted in arranging the delegation's business meetings with tech companies and business organizations from Singapore and Brunei. 

With government initiatives such the DTI’s Slingshot - a conference that brings together startups and DICT’s Philippine Roadmap for Digital Startups - a collaborative effort between private and public stakeholders, the local tech ecosystem is showing great potentials and paving strong opportunities for Filipino start-ups. 

ConnectTechAsia is the umbrella event of three communications and technology exhibitions: CommunicAsia, BroadcastAsia and NXTAsia where about 1,700 companies from 52 countries showed the latest trends in the telecoms, media and technology industry.♦
