The Department of Trade and Industry-Export Marketing Bureau (DTI-EMB) supported the participation of select SMEs in the 4th International Processing and Packaging Trade Event for the Philippines (ProPak Philippines 2024) held on 31 January to 02 February 2024 at the World Trade Center, Pasay City.

The SMEs had the opportunity to showcase their products, capabilities, and services at the country’s leading international processing and packaging trade show.  These SMEs generated an estimated potential sale of PHP 21 million with buyers mostly coming from the food sector.

The DTI-EMB supported ten (10) Philippine companies. These include: Ideatechs Packaging Corp. (Greenpak Philippines); Fas Development Corporation; JR Plastic Manufacturing Corporation; Megasamsotite Incorporated; Papercon Philippines Inc.; Phil-Top Industries Incorporated; Plastmann Industrial Corporation; Unibag Manufacturing Corporation; Rotopack Manufacturing Corporation; and Amley Food Corporation. Exhibitors at the DTI-EMB pavilion showcased a wide range of consumer and industrial products, including stand-up pouches, labels, cake boxes, meal boxes, paper cups, paper bowls, wrappers, cloth bags, bottle containers, carbouy containers, tamper evident containers, crates, sacks, canisters and nonfood ingredient pouch for mango pectin used in cosmetics.

ProPak Philippines 2024 provided a venue for the processing and packaging sectors and the food ingredient industry to gather in one location to forge stronger partnerships. The event included several seminars and conferences on topics such as packaging trends, sustainability, automation, and food safety.

The packaging market in the Philippines was valued at 64.4 billion units in 2022. According to a report published by GlobalData in May 2023, it is projected to have a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 5% from 2022 to 2027. The flexible packaging segment held the largest market share in the packaging market in the Philippines in 2022 and is projected to maintain this position until 2027. Rigid metal is expected to experience the highest growth rate between 2022 and 2027, followed by glass and flexible packaging.

The Asia-Pacific region was the highest contributor to packaging volumes in 2022, according to a report by GlobalData in December 2023. The packaging industry’s volumes reached 4.1 trillion units in 2022 as low-cost, sustainable packaging trended. Its volumes, which are expected to increase at a CAGR of over 2% from 2022–2027, consist of materials including flexible packaging, rigid plastics, paper and board, rigid metal, and glass. In 2022, flexible packaging gained the highest share of volume from pet care owners, as they increasingly relied on print-friendly and lighter-weight packaging materials. The popularity of flexible packaging shows no signs of decreasing.

The Philippines packaging industry is considered one of the most dynamic in the ASEAN region, driven largely by the food, consumer and industrial sectors. The increase in consumption driven by economic growth boosted the flexible and PET food packaging sector and the pharmaceutical sector. Given these developments, improvements in processing, manufacturing, and packaging technology are now more pronounced to position the Philippine packaging industry both in the domestic and foreign markets as a producer for competitive and sustainable packaging supplies and materials.

In ProPak Philippines 2024, local and international exhibitors also showcased their latest product advancements, highlighting their dedication to enhancing efficiency, sustainability, and excellence in the processing and packaging industry. Attendees had the chance to interact with experts, witness product demonstrations, and explore potential collaboration opportunities.
