Hong Kong, 4 September 2022 – The Philippines through the Philippine Trade and Investment Center (PTIC-HK) together with the Philippine Consulate General Hong Kong (PCGHK) participated in the 7th Belt and Road Summit (BRS) to promote its investment portfolio. The summit was jointly organized by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (Hong Kong SAR) Government and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) on 1-2 September 2022.

PTIC-HK uses the theme of “Make it Happen in the Philippines” campaign to attract investors from Hong Kong, China, and overseas. This campaign focuses on five key sectors, including: Aerospace, Automotive, Copper, IT & Business, and Electronics.

The BRS is billed as a premier international platform for promoting business collaboration.

In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of establishment of Hong Kong SAR, this year’s BRS is one of the signature events and the first time to use the hybrid format. With the theme “Heralding a New Chapter: Collaborate and Innovate,” the event attracted over 6,000 senior government officials and business leaders from more than 80 countries and regions to exchange insights on multilateral cooperation and explore concrete business opportunities. During the Opening Ceremony on 1 September, the newly elected Chief Executive (CE) of Hong Kong SAR, Mr. John Ka Chiu LEE delivered his remarks. He pointed out that the Belt and Road is built on collaboration and covers a wide spectrum of connectivity. “The Initiative has brought about trade and investment co-operation, as well as infrastructure development, unleashing profound potential and opportunities. The Hong Kong SAR Government has been partnering with different stakeholders in providing Belt and Road networking opportunities for business and professionals.” Said CE LEE.

He added that as a global city, an international financial and trade center and the business bridge between the Mainland China and the rest of the world — Hong Kong is ready to partner with Belt and Road companies and economies by providing essential project financing and professional services support, innovation and technology, capacity building, cultural awareness, wide-ranging connections, and much more.

During the event, PTIC-HK showcased 21 investment projects from three (3) Investment Promotion Agencies (IPAs) in the Philippines to foreign investors. The participating IPAs are Cagayan Economic Zone Authority (CEZA), Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA), and Zamboanga City Special Economic Zone (ZCSEZA). The business matching session between the foreign investors and IPAs was conducted online on 1-6 September 2022.

Vice Consul Commercial of the PTIC-HK, Atty. Roberto B. Mabalot, Jr., delivered a short presentation with the topic “Philippines as Your Preferred Destination for Doing Business”. In his interview with Xinhua News Agency and the HKTDC, he encouraged foreign investors to do business in the Philippines.

Notably, The Philippine delegation for this year’s BRS includes three (3) officials of the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-PCIEERD) and top officials of six (6) startup companies in the Philippines.
