In support to the advocacy of the Philippine Academy of Microbiology (PAM) to make Philippine Microbiologists globally competitive, DTI-PAB provided updates on Accreditation to the Philippine National Standard on Conformity Assessment – General Requirements for Bodies Operating Certification of Persons (PNS ISO/IEC 17024:2014) during its 31st Annual Meeting on 19 July 2022 conducted virtually.
The Philippine Academy of Microbiology (PAM) is the certification arm of the Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc. (PSM) which offers a certification examination for microbiologists. PAM envisions to facilitate the certification of qualified members of PSM as Registered or Specialist Microbiologists, and as Diplomates and Fellows. It further aims to take this to the next level by gaining accreditation as Certifying Body for Person. Certification of person is an internationally-recognized tool that intends to build confidence of markets, employers, and authorities on the competence of individuals who perform certain activities.
Accreditation on the other hand, is an independent evaluation of an organization that performs conformity assessments (like certification, inspection, testing and calibration) against a standard to ensure their impartiality, competence, and consistency of operations.
The Philippine Accreditation Bureau (PAB) is the national accreditation body of the Philippines mandated to accredit inspection, testing and certifying bodies, and other bodies offering conformity assessment services. It is recognized internationally through its membership to the International Accreditation Forum (IAF), International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC), Asia Pacific Accreditation Cooperation (APAC), Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Consultative Committee on Standards and Quality (ACCSQ) Working Group on Accreditation and Conformity Assessment (WG2) and International Halal Accreditation Forum (IHAF).
