The Department of Trade and Industry – Philippine Accreditation Bureau (PAB) successfully celebrated the World Accreditation Day 2023 through webinars on accreditation and certification standards on June 9 and June 16, 2023. Aligned with this year’s theme, “Accreditation: Supporting the Future of Global Trade,” the webinars aimed to shed light on the crucial role of accreditation and accredited certification in facilitating international trade.

The first webinar, conducted on June 9, focused on the certification standard “ISO/IEC 17065 – Requirements for bodies certifying products, processes, and services.” With a total of 146 participants, the session provided valuable insights into the requirements of ISO/IEC 17065, enabling a comprehensive understanding of product, process, and service certification.

Continuing the momentum, on June 16, PAB organized a webinar centered around “ISO/IEC 17021-1 – the accreditation standard containing the requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of management systems.”

This session drew a diverse audience from various sectors, with a total of 120 participants. The attendees included conformity assessment bodies which includes certification bodies, private and public organizations as well as consumers.

Ms. Ma. Juanita “Neth” P. Carpio, Head of the Management System Accreditation Division at PAB, delivered an engaging presentation, enriching the participants’ knowledge of the standard. She explained the significance of accreditation in the context of management system audit and certification while providing valuable insights on its actual implementation. The Management System Accreditation Division, led by Ms. Carpio, handles the PAB’s accreditation schemes for Management System, Product, and Person Certification Bodies, as well as Validation and/or Verification Bodies.

The chosen topics for this year’s celebration underscored the role of accreditation in promoting international trade by providing assurance to trading partners. PAB’s accreditation provides additional assurance that certification bodies possess the necessary competence, resources, and impartiality to deliver reliable certification services. This, in turn, minimizes trade barriers, reduces the risk of non-compliance, and fosters seamless international trade.

Accredited certification also offers customers the confidence that the products and services they purchase meet international standards, ensuring high quality, safety, and environmental sustainability. By encouraging the adoption of globally-recognized standards and best practices, accredited certification contributes to the growth of global trade and consumer protection.

The virtual activities were conducted through the Zoom platform to ensure accessibility and convenience for attendees from various locations.
