Poster from Philippine Trade and Training Center

Understanding ISO 15189 for Medical Laboratories was conducted through a webinar on 16-17 December 2020 as an offshoot to the collaboration between the Philippine Trade and Training Center (PTTC) and the Philippine Accreditation Bureau – Promotion and Documentation Division (PAB-PDD) in conducting training programs on international standards and other accreditation requirements.

Training on ISO 15189 for Medical Laboratories was identified as the first among many standards in recognition that laboratory results influence medical diagnoses, and that it is crucial to ensure the quality of laboratory services as the major factor which directly affects the quality of health care.

The resource person for the ISO 15189 webinar is Engr. Aldwin B. Tagapan, a freelance consultant and an active assessment team leader and technical assessor of the Philippine Accreditation Bureau (PAB) for ISO 15189, ISOIEC 17020, and ISO/IEC 17025. Thirteen (13) participants coming from private and government clinical laboratories, hospitals, and PAB personnel attended the event.

The collaboration between PTTC and PAB-PDD will provide conformity assessment bodies such as certification and inspection bodies, testing and calibration laboratories, and clinical/medical laboratories opportunities to learn the detailed requirements of specific international standards, and other accreditation requirements that will help increase their competence and productivity.

The Philippine Trade Training Center-Global MSME Academy (PTTC-GMEA) is the training arm of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and it is committed to assist Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in advancing their skills and competencies through comprehensive training and capacity building programs, facilities and services, and global discussions.

On the other hand, the Philippine Accreditation Bureau is the national accreditation body, mandated to accredit certification and inspection bodies, testing including medical, and calibration laboratories, and other bodies offering conformity assessment services. PAB is a signatory to the Multilateral Recognition Arrangement (MLA) for Quality Management System (QMS) and Environmental Management System (EMS) of Asia Pacific Accreditation Cooperation (APAC) and International Accreditation Forum (IAF), and to the Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) for testing, calibration, and medical laboratories as well as inspection bodies of APAC and International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC).

PAB’s signatory status to MLAs and MRAs allows Philippine products and services accompanied with accredited test/inspection/certification results to be competitive in international markets.
