The Department of Trade and Industry – Cordillera Administrative Region (DTI-CAR) joins the PhilCAFE, Philippine Nazarene College (PNC), Gintong Aral Skills Development Academy (GASDA), and Cordillera Quality Coffee Association (CQCA) in welcoming the visiting United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) officials at the coffee nursery located at Philippine Nazarene College, Pico, La Trinidad, Benguet on 25 August 2021.

The coffee nursery is under the PNC’s Farm-to-Cup program, which aims to enhance the coffee industry by offering technical vocational courses related to coffee planting, coffee processing, coffee preparation, and introduction of business opportunities in the said industry. It also puts importance on the integration of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) with new technologies that can improve yield and production of coffee in the area. Various private and partners from the country and overseas have come together to support the Farm-to-Cup Program.

The Arabica Nursery at Pico Road, La Trinidad boasts a wide variety of seedlings: Red Bourbon (5,600 seedlings), Yellow Bourbon (750 seedlings), Caturra (750 seedlings), Rwanda, Africa Arabica Varieties (100 seedlings), Typica (200 seedlings) and San Ramon Arabica (200 seedlings). The seedlings are part of On-Farm Technology Trial (OFTT) commissioned by PhilCAFE for Coffee Production Training, World Coffee Research and San Ramon Propagation Project.

A coffee bar was also established in the area, called Farm-to-Cup do-it-yourself (DIY) Brew Bar, which serves brewed local coffees.

“We grow most of our coffee beans in our own farm but we also source from our partner coffee farmers. After harvesting the coffee beans, we process, package, and sell them to end customer. We also offer our facilities for Learning and Skills Training, as a way of assisting our stakeholders in the coffee industry to expand their opportunities,” said PNC.

DTI – CAR continues to support the stakeholders of the coffee industry as the head of the Coffee Industry Cluster in the country through its programs.
