GENERAL SANTOS CITY – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 12, through its General Santos City Satellite Office, has partnered with the local government of General Santos City (LGU Gensan) and the General Santos City Small and Medium Enterprise Development Council (Gensan SMEDC) to organize the “Yabong mga Maliliit na Negosyo sa Gensan” (YAMAN Gensan) event, celebrating the collaborative efforts to develop and promote Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Now in its 21st year, this year’s YAMAN Gensan was officially opened on Wednesday, July 12, at SM City Gensan.

YAMAN Gensan is an annual event initially conceptualized by DTI 12, focusing on promoting local businesses and recognizing their vital roles in job creation and economic development.

A key highlight of the celebration is the YAMAN Gensan Trade Fair, which will run until August 11 and features the participation of 46 MSMEs currently receiving assistance from DTI and partner agencies.

During her message, delivered by Ma Theresa Chua – industry development chief, Flora Politud-Gabunales, the regional director of DTI 12, emphasized the importance of MSMEs in the local economy.

“Accounted to about 99 percent of the total business establishments and contributing to about a third of the country’s total employment, we recognize the important role of the MSMEs as the backbone of the Philippine economy,” said Politud-Gabunales.

Politud-Gabunales also highlighted the theme, “Patuloy na Pagyabong: Embracing Digitalization and Innovation,” and encouraged MSMEs to embrace technology, strive for continuous improvement, and surpass mediocrity through innovation.

Meanwhile, Eddie de Asis, the division chief and caretaker of DTI Gensan, mentioned that the fair aims to generate total sales of Php 1 million and that the various activities lined up for the month-long event will benefit around 1,000 MSMEs.

The trade fair was formally opened with a ribbon-cutting and bell-ringing ceremony.

Aside from DTI, partner national line agencies and local groups will hold entrepreneurial, skills, and productivity-enhancing sessions as part of the event. ♦
