The Department of Trade and Industry Region 2 (DTI R2), through its Industry Development Division (IDD), completed the third delivery of semi-processed peanuts from Cagayan Province to Growers Food Industries Enterprises Incorporated (GFIEI) on 26 August 2022.

After passing the laboratory analysis conducted by the DA-Cagayan Valley Integrated Agricultural Laboratory (DA-CVIAL) and the confirmatory quality standard tests conducted by the said company, two tons of semi-processed peanuts from Alcala, Cagayan were delivered to GFIEI in Valenzuela City, Metro Manila, as a result of the Farmer-To-Processor Market Linkage initiative of DTI R2.

This development initiative of the agency, spearheaded by Regional Director Leah Pulido Ocampo, is directed towards revitalizing the peanut industry in the region through value-adding activities.

Key peanut stakeholders from the locality who were present during the Feedbacking Session last 14 June 2022 were convinced by the Processed Fruits and Nuts regional focal person, Romeo Panopio II, together with DTI R2 Cagayan, to semi-process their harvest and sell it directly to processors and/or institutional buyers for a higher price.

Moreover, fresh peanuts are usually bought by traders at around P45.00/kilo. Meanwhile, selling unshelled peanuts to institutional buyers, it is priced at Php 100.00/kilo, making a 222% increase in its selling price. Thus, profitability is maximized.

This endeavor was possible through the collaborative efforts of LGU Alcala headed by Hon. Mayor Cristina I. Antonio by providing a shelling/sorting machine, as well as PLGU Cagayan led by Hon. Gov. Manuel Mamba and Provincial Agriculturist, Dr. Pearlita Lucia P. Mabasa, by providing logistics support.

Furthermore, this undertaking benefited around 157 peanut farmers from the 12 peanut-producing barangays of Alcala, Cagayan.
