GUMACA, QUEZON — Consumerism for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) was the theme of an empowering seminar by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)–Quezon through Negosyo Center–Gumaca and in partnership with People with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO)–Gumaca on June 21, 2023.

Mr. Philip Oliveros, Senior-Trade Industry Development Specialist of the DTI Quezon Consumer Protection Division discussed several topics including Consumer Rights and Responsibilities, Additional Privileges of Persons with Disabilities, and Consumer Protection in Internet Transactions. PWDs in Gumaca learned about their rights as consumers, such as defense against discrimination, unfair pricing, and misleading tactics.

Present during the seminar were Negosyo Center–Gumaca Business Counselor, PDAO–Gumaca, The Alliance of Thriving Abilities of Gumaca a.k.a TATAG Federation Officers, and the League of Barangay Coordinators for Persons with Disabilities.

In conclusion, the participants gained the right knowledge and ability to speak for themselves in the marketplace, demand fair treatment, and make educated judgments. They can now ensure their independence while also helping to create a more inclusive and accessible environment for everyone by utilizing their rights. As we uphold the ideals of equality and inclusion, let’s acknowledge the relevance of giving PWDs access to their consumer rights and obligations to build a society that recognizes and respects everyone’s choices and needs, regardless of their ability.
