World Accreditation Day (WAD)

World Accreditation Day is annually celebrated every 9th of June. It is a global initiative established by the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) and the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) to promote the value of accreditation.

Over the years, the World Accreditation Day has been celebrated focusing on various aspects of accreditation. This year’s theme, Accreditation: Sustainability in Economic Growth and the Environment, highlighted how accreditation supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6-Clean Water & Sanitation, 7-Affordable and Clean Energy, 8-Decent Work & Economic Growth, 9-Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure, 11-Sustainable Cities & Communities, 12-Responsible Consumption & Production, 13-Climate Action, 14-Life Below Water, and 15-Life on Land.

DTI-PAB WAD Celebration

The Philippine Accreditation Bureau (PAB) commemorated the occasion by hosting the virtual flag-raising ceremony for the Department of Trade and Industry on June 06, 2022, to encourage agency personnel to attend the upcoming forum.

On June 9, 2022, a Zoom forum on Accreditation: Sustainability in Economic Growth and the Environment was held with the goal of promoting the value of accredited conformity assessment activities.

In his welcome message, Dr. Napoleon K. Juanillo Jr., Assistant Secretary of the Department of Trade and Industry’s Competitiveness and Innovation Group mentioned the importance of accreditation to various sectors. “Accreditation provides policymakers, businesses, and other stakeholders with solutions to implement, measure, and monitor the SDGs’ objectives and targets,” Asec. Juanillo said.

Engr. Maria Juanita P. Carpio, Chief of the DTI-Management System Accreditation Division, presented the Philippine Accreditation Bureau’s mandate and the benefits of accreditation.

Engr. Sybil C. Paden, Director of Business Development at Certification International Philippines, Inc., was invited to present an overview of the ISO 14001 (Environmental Management System). On the other hand, Engr. Jason Magdaong of Didipio Mine/OceanaGold Philippines and Engr. Ma. Maxima Bernardo of Nippon Sanso Ingasco Philippines, Inc., discussed their experiences in obtaining accredited certification and the benefits of implementing ISO 14001.

DTI-PAB Director James E. Empeño delivered the closing remarks, thanking all participants and speakers. He emphasized that the World Accreditation Day celebration focuses on how accreditation supports broader global issues, and that, “the cooperation of all organizations is the key in ensuring our commitment to a brighter future for all and a world in which no one is left behind.”

The forum, facilitated by Mr. Jenebert P. Opinion was participated by 137 participants.
