For the month of April 2019, the Consumer Protection Division team discussed Complaints Handling and Resolution; the Expanded Senior Citizens Act and the Gift Check Act.
April 5, 2019: Complaints Handling and Resolution
Division Chief Felicidad S. Baylon discusses the jurisdiction of DTI in consumer complaints as well as the remedies available in case of dissatisfaction with products purchased and services availed. The steps and procedures in filing a complaint and the appropriate mediation proceedings to be held in order to avoid furtherance of a lawsuit. The topic aims to educate the consumers on their right to be heard and right to seek redress and to advise the business owners to recognize and take the effective measures to handle the consumer’s complaint.
April 12, 2019: Expanded Senior Citizens Act (R.A. 9994)
Division Chief Felicidad S. Baylon and TIDS Mar Anthony V. Alan discuss RA No. 9994 or the Expanded Senior Citizen Act particularly the privileges and benefits offered to Senior Citizens, the percentage of discount that can be availed and the products and services covered by this Act. The team also discuss remedies in case the Senior Citizen is unable to receive the discount he is entitled to.
April 26, 2019: R.A. 10962 Gift Check Act
Senior Trade and Industry Development Specialist Lourdito B. Antonio discusses the salient features of Republic Act 10962, an Act Regulating the Issuance, Use and Redemption of Gift Checks. The law and its implementing rules and regulation as discussed prohibits issuers from releasing gift certificates that have an expiry date. Under the law it is prohibited for stores to honor the unused value, credit or balance stored in the gift checks or compelling the holders of gift checks to consume the total value in a single or predetermined transaction.♦
