Mr. Edwardson Amorao’s inspiring journey with Mang Ed Handicrafts stands as a testament to the transformative power of dedication, resilience, and strategic guidance. The narrative unfolds with a proactive decision to reach out to the Laguna Coordinator for the CFIDP (Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan), Mark Vincent Arasa, signaling the beginning of a transformative partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). At the outset, Mang Ed Handicrafts faced the challenge of being unregistered, but with Arasa’s invaluable guidance, they successfully registered with both DTI and the Mayor’s permit, currently navigating the final steps toward BIR registration.

Before the intervention of DTI, Amorao grappled with challenges in pricing, identifying target markets, and determining suitable sales channels. The game-changing role of DTI, particularly through trade fairs, helped Mang Ed Handicrafts gain a deeper understanding of their market, tailoring products for diverse segments, including both high-end and low-end customers. Their participation in DTI trade fairs significantly expanded their reach and clientele.

Guided by Mr. Ronald Rommel Viloria, Mang Ed Handicrafts engaged in the Product Development Program of DTI Laguna. This initiative empowered them to innovate and diversify their product line, resulting in the creation of the multifunctional coco shell handicraft — a testament to their commitment to innovation and sustainability.

The pinnacle of Mang Ed Handicrafts’ success was marked by their recent triumph at the Fiesta Kucha Provincial Trade Fair, securing the prestigious title of “Best Booth Setup”. This accolade not only brought honor to Amorao and his team but also underscored the quality and creativity embedded in their products, reaffirming the positive impact of their journey under the guidance and support of DTI.

The journey was not without its challenges. Amorao recalled in 2016 when a massage therapist ordered 50 pairs of massage wood sticks from Mang Ed Handicrafts but did not return to fulfill the transaction. With DTI’s assistance, they transformed this potential burden into a profitable venture, showcasing the impact of strategic guidance on overcoming unforeseen obstacles.

Operating from a modest 3-storey, 12-square-meter house in San Pablo City, Laguna, Mang Ed Handicrafts embodies resilience. Despite spatial constraints, their products, meticulously crafted by hand, showcase creativity and productivity emanating from their vibrant living space.

In embracing the digital age, Mang Ed Handicrafts strategically expanded their market reach through Shopee, Lazada, and TikTok. Leveraging these online platforms has not only broadened their customer base but also demonstrated their adaptability to the evolving retail landscape, showcasing resilience and a forward-thinking approach.

As Amorao aptly reflects, “In the midst of challenges, we found opportunities. Through guidance and innovation, Mang Ed Handicrafts emerged stronger, turning obstacles into stepping stones on our path to success.” The success story of Mang Ed Handicrafts underlines the transformative role of perseverance, innovation, and strategic partnerships, inspiring aspiring entrepreneurs to pursue success with determination, resourcefulness, and a commitment to excellence. ♦
