BATAN ISLAND — DTI R2 Batanes conducted an Orientation on Bamboo Industry Development Program on 05 July 2023 at the Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO) Conference Hall followed by an on-site visit to the bamboo plantation across Batan Island the following day, 06 July 2023. This is in support of the national government’s efforts to boost the economic condition and preserve a healthy environment in the country by promoting the bamboo industry.

The implementation of the Presidential Executive Order 879 s. 2010, the Department of Trade and Industry sits as the chair of the Philippine Bamboo Industry Development Council together with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) as the co-chair.  

In 2022, DTI Region 2 Director Leah Pulido Ocampo, designated as the National Bamboo Industry Cluster Coordinator, pushed for the prioritization of the development of the bamboo industry in the whole of Region 2. Through a brief discussion, DTI R2 Batanes OIC Provincial Director Ellerie Mila G. Ramel mentioned this to the Provincial Governor Marilou H. Cayco, who then signified her interest and support in aligning it with the Provincial Government’s Bamboo Propagation Program.

Regional Bamboo Focal Person STIDS Anna Katrina Garcia served as the resource speaker to discuss the economic functions, products, and applications of bamboo and also included in her discussions 3 major concerns, namely: mitigate climate change and environmental protection, boost economic growth through job creation, and improve the quality of life of the Filipinos.

The participants from different NGAs, LGUs, academe, and private sectors, also crafted the initial plans for the development of the bamboo industry in the province.

During the on-site visit the next day, the DTI R2 Batanes team with Regional Bamboo Focal Person Garcia joined by Development Management Officer V Ariel Lagua of Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), OIC Provincial Director Samuel C. Falcis of Technical Education and Skills  Development Authority (TESDA), Station Manager Dr. Richard Q. of Department of Agriculture-Batanes Experimental Station (DA-BES), Forester Gayle Lorainne Lechua of Batanes State College, Sanggunian Panlalawigan members Hon. Anastacia Viola and Hon. Roland Cabitac, and Ms. Tesalonica Castillejos from the private sector. The team visited National Greening Program (NGP) sites located at Sitio Racuh a Payaman, Mahatao, and Brgy. Itbud, Uyugan where 514 and 214 seedlings of kawayan kiling were planted respectively. While observing along the way, the team was also able to recognize locally grown species found in the province which they will try to identify the uses of and, which area in Batanes it will thrive.

DTI R2 Batanes will closely work with the Provincial Government of Batanes together with the National Government Agencies (NGAs), Local Government Units (LGUs), academe, and private sectors to realize the #Bamboohay industry in the province. ♦
