The Department of Trade and Industry – Philippine Accreditation Bureau (DTI-PAB) reaffirmed its commitment to the enhancement of the Philippine health sector’s quality standards by hosting a two-half-day virtual orientation on the ISO 15189:2022 standard. The event, held on October 17-18, 2023, attracted over 500 participants from all over the Philippines.

ISO 15189:2022 is a globally recognized standard that specifies the requirements for quality and competence in medical laboratories. The orientation was aimed at disseminating knowledge about the latest version of this standard and its relevance in the ever-evolving healthcare landscape.

The orientation session covers the various aspects of ISO 15189:2022 and its practical applications in medical laboratories. Apart from gaining insights into the latest version of the standard, participants were also shared with best practices and the significance of adhering to ISO 15189:2022 to guarantee the highest level of quality and safety in healthcare services.

Engr. James E. Empeño, the Director of DTI-PAB expressed excitement in offering this public orientation as it mirrors a significant milestone in PAB’s mission to raise awareness about the latest version of the ISO 15189 standard, an internationally recognized benchmark for quality and competence in medical laboratories.

“Accreditation or even just the implementation of this standard, promises better patient care, operational efficiency, and an overall enhancement of healthcare quality,” said Dir. Empeño. ISO 15189 is used by medical laboratories to ensure consistent delivery of reliable, high-quality results.

The virtual event allowed meaningful discussions, questions, and exchanges of ideas between participants, which promoted an atmosphere of collaboration and shared learning. The attendees, including laboratory managers, healthcare professionals, and quality assurance experts, acknowledged the value of staying updated on international standards to enhance the overall quality of healthcare in the country.
