SAN PEDRO CITY — On May 1, 2023, the City Government of San Pedro officially launched the Sampaguita Festival. It is a week-long celebration, from May 1 to 6, 2023, which will feature cultural performances, a food and trade fair, an open street art festival, and open stage performances.

Apart from series of activities in celebration of the Sampaguita Festival, this year’s festival focuses mainly on showcasing various products made from the national flower of the Philippines as well as other products by local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The festival aims to promote tourism in the City of San Pedro and to revitalize Sampaguita industry in the community.

The Department of Trade and Industry Laguna Provincial Office, through its Negosyo Center in San Pedro City, was able to assist business owners and livelihood beneficiaries to register their businesses, educate them about DTI programs and services, and share information on the process of acquiring business permits and licenses, as part of the requirements to participate on the food and trade fair.

During the official launch on May 1, the opening ceremony was led by San Pedro City Mayor Art Mercado with Laguna Governor Ramil Hernandez, Vice Governor Atty. Karen Agapay, and 1st District Board Member Bong Bejasa.

Barangay Trade Fair Exhibit was opened where several barangays displayed their goods that are exclusive to their barangay. San Pedrense business owners and aspirants displayed and demonstrated their Sampaguita-based products during the 1st Shark Tank San Pedro – Sampaguita Product Business Proposal Competition on May 3, 2023, at the Takara Hotel and Events Place. The celebration also included a job fair and inauguration of The Sampaguita Nursery Park.

“The sampaguita industry has long been the livelihood of many of our fellowmen. Since it was popularized by the likes of David Amante after World War II, it has been one of the main sources of income among San Pedro residents,” City Mayor Mercado said. “This Sampaguita Festival will also be one of our launchpads for economic recovery from the effects of Covid-19,” he added. The city government hopes to boost its local sampaguita industry through the revival of Sampaguita Festival.
