On 18 April 2024, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) R2-Cagayan led by PD Henry O. Conel Jr., and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Claveria led by Hon. Mayor Lucille Angelus Guillen-Yapo, convened for a pivotal meeting to explore avenues for enhancing economic growth.

In her opening statement, Mayor Yapo expressed heartfelt gratitude to the DTI representatives for personally coming over to discuss the agency’s initiatives, emphasizing the significance of their presence in advancing the municipality’s economic prospects.

During the meeting, PD Conel stressed DTI’s readiness to support the development of the abaca industry in Claveria, highlighting the need for teamwork between the local government unit (LGU) and DTI. Likewise, Ms. Cynthia Talattad, Chief of Business Development Division- DTI R2 Cagayan, detailed DTI’s commitment to providing technical aid for this venture, such as skills training and business programs, to support local stakeholders.

As to the aim for utilizing Claveria’s resources, Ms. Alpha Jessica Paggabao, Provincial Focal Person for Wearables and Homestyle, presented proposed actions focusing on abaca fiber development, establishing a Pasalubong Center, and rolling out the One Barangay, One Product (OBOP) and One Town, One Product (OTOP) programs.

Furthermore, STIDS Maricris Galinggana discussed the Regional Comprehensive Integration (RCI) 5-year plan tailored for Claveria, outlining strategies and priorities to be implemented in partnership with the LGU and stakeholders, in line with the municipality’s economic vision.

On the other hand, Hon. Vice Mayor Fredelino D. Agpuldo emphasized an existing LGU Ordinance aimed at supporting abaca cultivation, which includes provisions such as requiring high school graduation candidates to plant a minimum of five abaca seeds. Moreover, he shared on the draft OTOP Ordinance proposing abaca as the flagship product, signaling the municipality’s intent to prioritize and promote the growth of this industry.

The Municipal Tourism Office also conveyed their request for training on Product Designing from DTI. Recognizing the significance of enhancing local craftsmanship and design skills, this training would equip local artisans with the necessary skills to innovate and create high-quality products, thus contributing to the overall development and promotion of Claveria’s tourism sector.

Both parties emphasized the importance of collaboration and expressed optimism about the potential impact of these initiatives. Mayor Yapo welcomed the proposed partnership, acknowledging DTI’s support and affirming the LGU’s dedication to achieving shared goals for the community.
