SANCHEZ MIRA, CAGAYAN — The 4th International Summit on Grey-faced Buzzard and Migratory Raptors (ISGFBMR) commenced as the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Sanchez Mira geared up for an exhilarating Bazaar Opening in close collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 2 and DTI R2 Cagayan, alongside with the Department of Tourism (DOT) on 23 March 2024, at the Sanchez Mira Rizal Park and Sanchez Mira People’s Gym, Sanchez Mira, Cagayan.

DTI R2 Regional Director Leah Pulido Ocampo together with DTI Cagayan Provincial Director Henry O. Conel, Jr. graced the event. RD Ocampo expressed her wholehearted support for this endeavor, underlining its importance in promoting the region’s rich offerings, as the Bazaar proudly exhibited locally-made and coconut-based products, featuring the active involvement of local coconut industry players. RD Ocampo also emphasized the conservation of the Grey-faced Buzzard (a migratory raptor locally known as “Sawi”) and its contribution to the coconut industry ecosystem in the region.

According to her, the grey-faced buzzard, or Sawi in the local dialect, plays an important role in the coconut industry ecosystem. The sawi feeds on the larva of a deadly pest called bannirong, which afflicts and feeds on the coconut trees that is why the municipality’s coconut trees, popularly known as Sanchez Mira Tall remains to be one of the most resilient and productive coconut varieties in the country, despite the fact that they are of old age. The secret to a sustainable and enduring coconut industry in Sanchez Mira is actually, the Sawi! The Sawi is indeed our best-kept secret for a sustainable, productive, and vibrant coconut industry in Sanchez Mira.
