A brighter future awaits our organic farmers in the Summer Capital of Nueva Vizcaya, the municipality of Kayapa, as DTI R2 Nueva Vizcaya led by Provincial Director Atty. Michael B. Paggabao and the town’s Local Government Unit led by Mayor Elizabeth Balasya discussed possible product development and marketing interventions to improve and promote Kayapa’s organic agriculture sector and other top industries.

During PD Paggabao’s courtesy visit, Mayor Balasya mentioned that the Kayapa Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) Group is the first group of organic farmers in the entire Cagayan Valley to be certified by the Department of Agriculture to train and likewise certify their fellow organic farmers.

The Mayor also discussed the challenges faced by the said group, specifically in marketing their produce. PD Paggabao mentioned the increasing demand for organic produce and committed the agency’s support and assistance in helping the farmers improve their packaging and labeling, and link them to institutional buyers and bigger marketing platforms.

Among the interventions and/or subject matters discussed include the Roads Leveraging Linkages of Industry and Trade (ROLL IT) Program; the reorientation of the Local Price Coordinating Council; interventions for the coffee, food processing, and loom weaving industries; Nueva Vizcaya goes to Alabang Provincial Trade Fair; conduct of possible skills training; and the development and/or crafting of Kayapa’s brand for local products.

Mayor Balasya expressed her full support for the agency’s programs and activities that will help the people of Kayapa and mentioned how excited she is for the collaboration of both agencies.

After meeting the Mayor, PD Paggabao and the team also visited some of the MSMEs in the town, specifically the cut-flower and statice farms, Kayapa Weavers and Sewers Association, and Melbz Handicraft. They also conducted a short counseling session with some of the entrepreneurs when the team visited the Negosyo Center Office.

During the visit, the team was able to assess the current needs and challenges faced by these MSMEs and exchange ideas with them to further enhance their respective industries.

Mayor Balasya was accompanied by Municipal Agriculturist Ruffin Fernandez during the meeting. Also with PD Paggabao were SBC Jannyn Lafeguera and TIDS Robelyn Mae Lising.
